Announcing xProject
Published: 7/30/2007 11:18:00 AM
I am happy to announce that today Entech is beginning work on a new project management and bug-tracking web application called xProject. This post is the first of a series in which I will talk about xProject, project management, and collaboration tools geared toward both planning and maintenance of complex software projects. In this first post, I will give you a brief overview of xProject and why we created it.

What is xProject?
xProject seemlessly combines project management and bug tracking into a single web application. It is written in C# and runs in .Net2.0

Why xProject?
Before we decided to come up with our own solution, we performed extensive research on what is currently available.

Many products on the market advertise that they can do Project Management and Bug Tracking. The issue we found with that claim was that they were really good for Project Management or Bug Tracking, but not both at the same time.

For example - applications like Basecamp from 37 Signals and free open source activecollab are really good for Project Management (planning and collaboration), while Bugzilla, DotProject and FogBugz are all about bug-tracking.

So instead of installing two software packages to tackle the two main aspects of Software Engineering, we decided to write our own.

What Features Will xProject Have?
The alpha version will have the following features:
  • Document management
  • Tasks management
  • Tasks estimation
  • Task groups and sub-groups (up two 3 levels)
  • Releases
  • Project Phases
  • Maintenance with full bug-tracking support
  • API

Look for more updates once it is in alpha.
